Government Gods Like Cruise Ships

By Sue Seboda

During Covid a dangerous creature emerged – the government god.  In search of relevance, these self-appointed gods picked Covid winners and losers.  They delivered incredible profits to big box corporate giants while shuttering small businesses even if they could operate safely.   Casinos won, churches lost.  Airlines, where passengers sit inches apart, continued to fly but restaurants were closed, some forever. They gave “essential” folks the ability to pay their bills and booted many “nonessentials” to food lines and government handouts.  All the while the government gods were free to ignore their own rules and studiously avoid the very real consequences of lockdowns.  Sadly the fear soaked citizens let them do it.

In Key West, we are once again at the mercy of government gods.  This branch of Tallahassee gods has decided they know what’s best for Key West and they, and they alone, will pick the winners and losers in our town.  The House will vote on HB267 soon and, if passed, the bill will land on Governor DeSantis’s desk for signature or veto.  HB267 seeks to override the November 2020 referendum in which Key West citizens voted to restrict the size and number of cruise ships.  This bill was sponsored by Rep. Spencer Roach from Ft Myers and Rep. Tyler Sirois of Merritt Island.

Inquiring minds would like to know how the size of cruise ships in Key West impacts Ft Myers, Merritt Island or any other city in Florida?  Have Rep. Roach and Sirois been in Key West when thousands of cruise ship passengers have been disgorged?  Are Rep. Roach and Sirois aware that many businesses in Key West are doing notably better without cruise ships?  Have they bothered to ask why that might be?  Have they evaluated how businesses who have been hurt with no cruise ships will be impacted when they return at a level consistent with the referendum? Or are they only focused on the reduced income that Mark Walsh and Pier D Development will experience from smaller ships?

Has Mark Walsh’s nearly $1,000,000 donation to Friends of Ron DeSantis encouraged Rep. Roach and Sirois to arrogantly assert we “are engaging in economic elitism in an attempt to remake Key West in the mold of Martha’s Vineyard”.  First, why do they care what happens in our town?  Second, are we elitists if we want cleaner water?  Third, is it elitism to prefer more businesses that serve both the locals and tourists and less that peddle junk?  Fourth, please produce one human being who wants Key West to be Martha’s Vineyard.  In my humble opinion it is elitism for any Tallahassee god to create laws that determine which Key West businesses prosper and which do not thereby impacting the nature of our town.

Regardless of your political party or whether you are for or against cruise ships, we should unite in the knowledge that our vote matters.  If those at the State level believe the citizens made a mistake, let’s examine all of the facts and perhaps hold another referendum if current reality differs from assumptions made in November 2020.  As a community we should honestly evaluate how and which businesses have been and will be impacted with no, limited, or the maximum number of cruise ships. We should also determine post covid travel patterns before any decision is made since this could significantly impact the debate.  One thing we cannot do, however, is let the government gods take over our town and once again pick who wins and who dies.

Key West vs the Cruise Industry

Open Letter to Governor Ron DeSantis

The purpose of this letter is to express opposition to the recently passed SB426 which overrides Key West citizens’ vote to limit the size and number of cruise ships and request that you veto this bill in its current form.  I also wish to register disturbance that this bill has been crafted and supported by my fellow republicans many of whom do not live in Key West.

Supporters fail to acknowledge a very basic question.  Did Key West have the legal authority to hold the referendum?  If so, then any attempt to silence the voters is wrong.   The shortsighted arrogance of this effort smacks of the nauseating elitism and hypocrisy we are exposed to on a daily basis.  If republicans wish to distinguish themselves as the party of common sense and principle then we better start walking the walk at every level of government.

The only conceivable reason to override the Key West voters is if their actions caused grievous harm to other Floridians.  Did they?  Please detail exactly how since limiting the size of cruise ships in Key West appears to be a local issue and has no impact on the citizens of Bradenton or Fort Myers.  The argument that all ports serve the entire state does not apply. The only “goods” being delivered by cruise ships are tourists not trade product destined for the local and regional supply chain.

Other reasons to support SB426 have been bandied about such as:

  • The citizens’ vote was based on an environmental report that was flawed.
  • Those in favor of cruise ships did not have the opportunity to present their data adequately.
  • Very few people voted.
  • People impacted by this vote such as those who work in restaurants do not live in Key West and did not have the opportunity to voice their opinion.
  • Businesses are negatively impacted by the vote to restrict cruise ships.

Please see my responses below:

  • Scientists have conflicting opinions regarding the environmental impact, but our laymen eyes see the difference as do our local fisherman.  Some have made the fair point that restricting cruise traffic to smaller ships will result in dirtier older ships.   Doesn’t that statement alone suggest that all ships have an environmental impact?
  • If new data exists that conclusively demonstrates there is no environmental impact of large cruise ships, work with the City to present this data and hold a new referendum.  The citizens can review and vote accordingly.
  • After the election shenanigans we have observed, it has been shocking to hear anyone diminish the value of legal votes.  In addition, if the number of people that voted determined the validity of an election, elections would be thrown out all over the country.  It is an absurd argument.
  • With a record number of visitors, many Key West businesses that cater to locals, vacation rentals and hotel guests, experienced increased March 21 profits compared to March 19.  Please detail exactly which businesses are in decline because the blanket statement that all businesses will suffer without cruise ships is untrue.  I suspect the primary businesses with reduced profits are those that sell cheap trinkets from China or run the $5.00 tee shirt scam.  Many citizens oppose the proliferation of such stores. Do Key West citizens have the right to determine the tone and tenor of their own town without interference from state level politicians?  In the opinion of at least 10,000 Key West voters, the answer is yes.
  • Anyone who is actually in Key West knows that town is packed.  Restaurant reservations are difficult at best.  If a restaurant is failing now, one can only assume it has nothing to do with cruise ships.  More likely they need to improve marketing efforts, are having difficulty finding staff or their food is bad.

We must also consider the big picture.  We are in a twilight zone world of disinformation, boundless corruption and power struggles in which the combatants fully believe the ends justify very destructive means.  2022 and 2024 elections will determine whether we continue down a path of false narratives or turn the tide towards facts and common sense, a path towards centralized collectivist government or federalism, a path of divisive identity politics enforced by cancel culture or the free expression of critical thought.  In order to change course, we need principled leaders who are an uncorrupted, shining force of good.  The question is simple.  Is this a principled bill or one based on cruise industry dollars in the pockets of swamp creatures?

Certainly I am naïve about the mechanics of politics but I do know that it is impossible to make everyone happy and this fact surely plays into a numbers game of votes and campaign contributions.  Considering the state of our country and how long it’s been since we have had solid leadership, I do believe the people will open their wallets wide and stampede to the polls if a truly genuine, principled leader emerges.  We hope that leader is you.  Please choose wisely when this bill lands on your desk.  Our country depends on it.

Sincerely,

Sue Seboda

On Learning to Shoot…

Sue Seboda, Guns Part 1, March 27, 2020

When you grow up in a house with 4 brothers whose rite of passage was boar hunting, chances are you will know something about guns.  It wasn’t much.  My sister and I had our rite of passage when Kate came along and whisked us off to New York to learn shopping.  What an excellent student I was.  My gathering skills are superb to this day.  Even though the boys and girls were on divergent hunter/gatherer paths, I dabbled in skeet shooting, but really, I was much better buying a shotgun than using it.

Decades go by and last October I stumbled upon the Everglades.  It was love at first site.  I go to enjoy nature and photography whenever Earl heads north.  Then the questions started.  Are you out there all by yourself?  Yes, I am good with that.  Isn’t that dangerous? No. Aren’t you worried about the alligators?  No, they are only dangerous if you are a little person or are stupid enough to feed them.  At this point, the questions shift to statements.  Listen (dummy) you are out there by yourself miles from anywhere.  You should be armed.  I then utter the phrase learned from years of marriage that is guaranteed to shut down further nagging – good point.

A friend did join me on the last Everglades trip and we hiked a swamp trail.  Even I am not foolish enough to do that on my own.  We caught movement a couple feet in front of us and a large cottonmouth was sliding across the path.  We all stopped at once and a standoff ensued.  The message was clear.  I win, you lose.  You are afraid of me and I am having too much fun toying with you.  Haha haha! And guess what jackass, you are going to turn around and I am going to continue to sun myself on this path.  Got it?  Hmmmmmm.  I didn’t like that.  But, yeah, I got it now.  A gun won’t protect me from a snake bite, my new snake boots will do that, but one is a bit vulnerable in the back of beyond.  Time to level the playing field and stop saying “good point”.

When the student is ready, the teacher appears.  Chuck Meier and I set an appointment for a concealed carry class and follow up handgun training.  Between setting the appointment and our class, the country erupted into the current insanity.  Apparently there are two things Americans must have when in full panic mode, guns and toilet paper.  So now I am part of a gun buying clump.  I don’t do clumps.  Or insanity for that matter. But I digress.

Chuck holds classes in his office and several things were immediately clear.  Most people would not mess with him whether he was armed or not, he lost his leg and is a white guy with a black prosthetic foot.  I knew as soon as Chuck started speaking that he possessed the knowledge I needed, did not have one politically correct cell in his body and was born without an edit function.  While I hoped I would hear the story about the foot, I was certain I had found the right teacher.

After the class, we headed to the gun range.  The other two people went first and by the time I went in, I was in quite a state.  Note to self, when you are doing something that thoroughly scares you, wear drug store deodorant.  That natural stuff is no match for the fear generated by big guns and deafening noise.  Chuck walked out for a moment and a guy in the next lane was preparing to shoot.  When he did, I let out a yelp and jumped out of my shoes.  This was not good.

We started with a Glock 357, a big, loud handgun with a notable kick.  Chuck calls it snappy.  I learn how to stand and hold the gun.  With a proper grip and a deep breath, the moment of truth arrives, it’s time to pull the trigger.  WTF.  Snappy is a bit of an understatement. Regroup.  Do it again but pull the trigger sloooowwwwllllly.  Double WTF. Regroup, stop shaking, take a breath.  Yes somewhere along the line, I forgot about that breathing business.  And repeat.  Repeat again.  Time for a break.  Yes, yes a break is good, very good.  Make it a long one.  Chuck talks for a while and I am only sort of listening. Instead I am having a serious conversation with myself.  Am I picking that gun up again or am I out of here?  Pros and cons, back and forth. Then I said to myself, put your big girl panties on and pick up that gun.  And I did…

Details:

  • Why begin training with a Glock 357?  Chuck explained – “I wanted to show that with the proper training, grip, sight picture and follow through, you can hit a target in rapid fire succession with max survivability.  We call that a confidence builder.  After shooting the Glock 357, any other self defense round is going to be child’s play meaning the recoil will be much more manageable, the report or sound will not be as deafening and the firearms themselves are much more forgiving making the accuracy more precise.” Plus he has tons of 357 ammo.  Ammo is as difficult to find right now as toilet paper.
  • If you are one of the 550,000 or so people who bought a gun in the last couple weeks and are a first time gun owner, do yourself a favor and get some training.  If you are in the Keys, call Chuck Meier . If you want to practice on your own, call Phil at Big Coppit Gun Club.  Verify if Phil has ammo for your gun, you may need to bring your own.

Heavy Breathing

Hey Baby

I would have bet that reptile mating rituals were a wham, bam, thank you ma’am scenario.  Not so for the loggerhead sea turtle.  On the way to Snipes we noticed a commotion off the port bow.  After a slow approach, imagine our surprise to discover sea turtles having their way with one another.  It was quite the spectacle. They were far too occupied to notice five humans madly photographing them or our continuous stream of hushed commentary and laughter.  They eventually broke apart but to our delight they swam back into each other’s flippers.

Inquiring minds led us to the Key West aquarium for the daily presentation on loggerheads.  What remarkable creatures.  Their shell is 2.5 to 3.5 feet long and weigh 155 lbs – 355 lbs.  They can live up to 70 and start mating at maturity which occurs between 17 and 33.

Loggerheads are solitary beings and notable travelers, migrating hundreds and occasionally thousands of miles between their feeding grounds and nesting beach.  Amazingly, females often return to the same nesting beach where they were born.  How the loggerheads navigate is a mystery although those who study such things have theories.

Loggerhead Ecstasy

When it’s time to make babies, males come a courting, plying the female with gentle love bites or a bit of nuzzling. The female says yeah or nay.  If yeah, the male uses the hooks on his front flippers to attach himself to the back of the female’s shell. He then folds his long tail under her shell to get the job done.  They can go at it for hours.

When it is time to lay the eggs, the loggerhead crawls up her sandy birth beach, digs a hole, lays approximately 100 ping pong sized eggs, fills the hole and heads back out to sea.

There is not a helicopter mom in the bunch.  Once she disguises the nest, the mom has nothing more to do with her babies.  In roughly 60 days, they hatch, help each other out of the nest and head to sea, hoping to avoid predators every step of the way.  Turns out many birds and fish think baby turtles are a tasty treat.

Loggerhead girls only nest every two to three years and have 2 – 5 egg clutches each breeding season.  With this rate of reproduction and typical predation (learned a new word), human interference in the life cycle has resulted in a decline in loggerhead population. Trash is also a problem.  When in the water, plastic bags look like jelly fish, a staple of the loggerhead diet.  Imagine eating a plastic bag.  Not good for loggerheads either.  For more information check out the Turtle Conservancy website.

A photography tip.  I am going to keep my camera in multiple image mode.  There is always time to take it off and rarely time to add it.  With all the thrashing about and flippers flapping, it was hard to capture and frame images properly with only a single shot.

So there you go.  Something interesting to start the day.

Presidents and Residents Get Busy

For both supporters and protestors, the town was all a twitter yesterday when President Trump came to town.  Helicopters buzzed.  People made signs,  hung flags and settled in.  Apparently protestors wore black and supporters color.  We didn’t get that memo.

The motorcade took Route 1 to White Street and on to Truman Annex via United.  Photos tell the story.  Thank you Michael Freas for sharing your photos from Route 1 and Ed for your photo from Boca Chica.

Navy Jets and Naked Men

Key West is a great place to learn photography.  Just take a walk and something interesting (or bizarre) will present itself. So when I had to decide between a pile of distasteful chores or going walkabout with my camera, it was a two second decision.  Boca Chica beach has been on my radar forever and what a day to finally go.  When there is a rare northwest wind, the navy jets use a runway that ends about 20’ from the narrow beach.  Plus the fence is busted so had a clear shot of the runway.  I love this one.

The jet on the left was accelerating and the exhaust plume gives everything the feeling of looking through antique glass.  It did not occur to me at the time to wonder what I inhaled.  Oh well.

Seven jets took off and they were back in about 20 minutes.  Some photos are not sharp but they are good enough to see the personalized paint jobs. What fun. Note to self.  Bring ear plugs next time.  Note to navy.  Fix the fence.

After shark mouth landed I continued walking towards the end of the beach. There was a buck-naked guy standing in all his glory, cell phone in hand, having a full-on business convo.

The grove was tricked out like a permanent camp, not a day at the beach.  Regardless of my strong desire to take a photo of this infinitely fascinating scene, I did not.  Considering his pose, not sure if he is happy about that or not.  I have heard various things about what goes on at this beach.  I asked some folks again today who suggested squatters were on the beach and going there alone wasn’t my best idea.  Not sure about that.  Another friend said it was simply a nude beach.  Still wish I had that photo. Took this tame one instead.
